More than $13,000 was raised by local businesses and members of the community to help a family who lost their home to a fire the day after Hurricane Irma.
Teresa and Allen Baker, who had lived in their Wildwood home for more than 25 years, were the beneficiaries of a local salon’s attempt to help rebuild their lives, in an event that featured a live auction and donations from multiple local businesses.
“Everyone in this little community came together and donated items and money for this family,” said Annette Frederick, owner of Hair and Nail Creations.
The Bakers lost power due to Hurricane Irma and were living by candlelight on Sept. 12, when one of their candles set a room in their home ablaze.
Frederick took the opportunity to forego celebrating her 20th year in business in favor of doing a fundraiser for the Baker family.
“The event went better than what I dreamed it ever would for trying to plan it in 3 weeks. If there is one thing that I do know for sure is that people really care. It has totally touched my heart to its core,” Frederick said.
