Local church to offer free weddings for same-sex couples

A local church is planning to offer no-cost marriage ceremonies to same-sex couples.

With the U.S. Supreme Court declining to hear a number of appeals, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Marion County officials said they are preparing to celebrate the arrival of marriage equality in Florida.

The church is located at 7280 SE 135th St. in Summerfield.

The congregation and its minister, Rev. Janet Onnie, hope to offer marriage ceremonies, free of charge, in the days following any decision that empowers same-sex couples to wed in Marion, Lake, or Sumter counties.

In addition to the ceremony itself, members of the congregation will be on hand with flowers and wedding cupcakes and to assist couples with photographs.

“Couples from our congregation have had to travel hundreds of miles to be married in states that recognize the validity of their marriage,” said Rev. Onnie.
