A 21-year-old Lady Lake man who told his mother he “got caught up with the wrong people” has been arrested in the theft of family heirloom firearms.
Neven McDonald is facing charges of grand theft of a firearm and armed burglary. He was booked Monday at the Lake County Jail on $27,000 bond.
His mother told Lady Lake police that her son broke into a shed at their home on Griffin View Drive and stole an antique Italian double-barreled 12-gauge shotgun and a .50-caliber muzzle loader rifle. The guns had been willed to McDonald’s brother by his late grandfather.
The disappearance of the guns came to light when a man who claimed to have purchased the guns showed up to claim them.
When McDonald’s mother asked her son via text message why he had taken the guns, he responded he “got caught up with the wrong people,” according to the arrest report.
