A 44-year-old man has been jailed in Sumter County after he barricaded himself in his home with his 7-year-old son and the SWAT and hostage negotiating teams were called in for an all-night operation.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a domestic disturbance Wednesday afternoon in which Kevin Osborne of Bushnell had reportedly struck an elderly female family member. Osborne then grabbed his son and forced the child into his black Dodge pickup truck fleeing the area. Deputies spotted the vehicle on County Road 48 and began to pursue the suspect’s vehicle attempting to stop the vehicle. However, Osborne refused to stop.

Osborne arrived at his home on County Road 628 and barricaded himself inside with the child. Deputies secured the location then the SWAT team and Hostage Negotiation team were activated. Negotiations went on throughout the night.

At 10:51 a.m. Thursday, after being reassured by law enforcement, friends and family members, Osborne released the child and surrendered without incident. Osborne is being held without bond on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, fleeing/eluding police officers, battery, child cruelty, and false imprisonment.
