The Marion County Board of County Commissioners approved an ordinance to reinstate transportation impact fees and a new impact fee schedule in Marion County.
During a public hearing on Sept. 1, commissioners voted 4-1 to reinstate the fees on Jan. 1, 2017. Commissioner Moore dissented. The fees will return after a hiatus of several years; the Commission suspended them in 2010 amid the economic recession.
The transportation impact fee is a one-time fee charged to new development that is used to assist the county in providing adequate transportation facilities for expected growth. Impact fees are based on the type and size of the new development, and how much traffic it is expected to create.
The Commission chose to adjust all impact fee rates for all development types to promote economic development, resulting in rates that are currently lower than those previously suspended in 2010. Under the new impact fee schedule, the impact fee for a typical medium-sized single family home is reduced from $6,543 to $1,397.
