Marion County loses out on recommendation for nursing home site

Despite efforts to woo a veterans nursing home to Marion County, it appears the home is going to be built in Port St. Lucie.

A site in western Port St. Lucie has been recommended for the state’s seventh veterans’ nursing home, beating out the proposed Marion County site.

Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs Executive Director Mike Prendergast has recommended the Treasure Coast site.

The location of the nursing home will be the subject of a Sept. 23 state Cabinet meeting. Gov. Rick Scott and the Cabinet are expected to vote on the site selection during the meeting.

The state’s other veterans’ nursing homes are in Daytona Beach, Land O’ Lakes, Pembroke Pines, Panama City, Port Charlotte and St. Augustine.
