Mary Hauber

Mary Hauber
Mary Hauber

Mary Hauber, age 91, died March 1, 2015 after a short illness. She moved from South Wales, NY to the Villages with her daughter, Barbara McManus, in 2008 and enjoyed the village’s lifestyle. She will be missed by many.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Edgar Hauber. Besides Barbara, she had two other children Ann Everts (Karl) of Arcade, NY and David Hauber (Sue) of Troy, NY. She was also blessed with 7 grandchildren and 13 ½ great-grandchildren. Mary crocheted baby blankets for all of her great-grandchildren including the one not born yet. She loved to make things.
Mary lived a full life. Up until 2008, she lived in Western New York. During WWII, she worked at Curtiss Wright as a secretary, but wished she could join the other women in the factory working on the Planes (like Rosy the Riveter). So she did. She welded the wheel pockets in the P40 War Hawk fighter planes and wired dash boards on the Curtiss C-46 Commando. She really enjoyed working with the ladies.
Shortly after that she worked as a volunteer airplane spotter in a tower south of Buffalo, NY. She climbed the tower and watched for enemy planes at night. If she saw one, she was to use the phone in the tower to call in what she saw.
When she married Edgar, they built a home together from the trees in the neighboring woods. Ed built a Mobil gas station and did welding for the farmers in the area. They built one of the first in-ground swimming pools where Mary spent many hours entertaining friends and families during the summer months.
About once a year, Ed would announce they were going on a road trip. They traveled with their 3 children exploring the United States of America (of course excluding Alaska and Hawaii). When the children grew up, they took a camper all the way to Alaska and then flew to Hawaii. They saw all of the country plus some Caribbean cruises.
After Edgar’s death in 1996, Mary traveled with her daughters Barb and Ann to visit her father’s homeland, Ireland. She managed to travel to England, France, Luxemburg, Belgium, Germany, Venezuela, Slovakia, Austria and Czech Republic.
Mary loved hummingbirds and gardens, both in NY and Florida. The orchids and roses here in Florida were her favorite. The front garden and lanai always had color and beautiful scents. Her flowers will miss her as well as her friends, family and neighbors.
