A gathering will be held later this month for Fruitland Park journalist and cafe owner Steve Fussell.
He died Nov. 13 at UF Shands Hospital in Gainesville with his wife Niki Pewsey by his side. He suffered from an unknown cancer that started in his lung and spread to his spine fracturing his C5 cervical vertebrae. He was 65.
Fussell ran the news site http://fruitlandparknews.org and the Fruitland Park Cafe on U.S. Hwy. 27/441. He had worked as a correspondent for the Daily Commercial and Villages-News.com. In 2014, Fussell had been appointed by Fruitland Park Mayor Chris Bell to serve on the city’s charter review committee.Â
Fussell was the eldest of five brothers. Â He was born in Alabama, but considered himself a native Floridian and loved the ecology Florida swamps and rivers offered. He canoed and fished and collected vintage lures. He attended Florida State University.
Friends and family are invited to gather from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30 at Beyers Funeral Home in Lady Lake.
