To the Editor:
I’m The Music Man.
Ten years ago I started bringing my CD player and plugging it in and playing my music at the volume for me alone. As the years went by people in the pool wanted me to turn the music up for them to hear and I accommodated them. Occasionally a person would come in and ask me to turn it down which I did and when that person left, I would turn the volume up. Eventually I learned to read the crowd who came into the pool and turned the volume down when I would see a person I knew who didn’t like the music. Finally the people who didn’t like the music were not coming into the pool and so I left the volume up.
Recently on Father’s Day, an attendant came to the pool to tell me to turn the music down, which I did. The following Monday I was told to turn the music down again and I said the people in the pool will not be able to hear it and the attendant left the pool. The next time the attendant came to the pool I was told that I was not allowed to play my music unless I used earphones so I turned the music off. I had a friend who negotiated with the manager of the pools and he said I could play my music but I could not use the electrical outlet in the pool. I thought that was an amenity that I was entitled to since I pay amenity fees. I was told that was a liability. A liability? The whole pool is an liability, much less an electrical outlet.
So after 10 years of no incidents, one person complained to management and ruined it for many pool-goers who enjoyed the music.
