A meeting later this month of the new Villages chapter of the National Retiree Legislative Network (NRLN) will focus on protecting pension plans, preserving Social Security and Medicare.
The meeting will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Laurel Manor Recreation Center.
Guest speakers will include NRLN president Bill Kadereit and Ed Beltram, the group’s vice president.
Acting chapter president Debbie Austin will lead a discussion on the growing chapter membership while Kadereit will talk about the importance for retirees of having a voice in Washington, D.C., to protect their pensions and Social Security as well as trying to reduce the cost of prescription drugs.
NRLN is a 14-year-old advocacy organization that lobbies Congress on behalf of retirees from more than 200 corporations, representing more than 2 million retirees in groups such as the American Airlines Retirees Committee and Ekra-Kodak Retirees. The organization has supporters in all 50 states and 75 percent of the nation’s congressional districts.
The organization became interested in The Villages after a decision last summer by The Villages Health to no longer accept patients who have Original Medicare with a supplement plan, also known as Medigap. That decision went into effect Jan. 1.
