Ocala man arrested after allegedly leaving scene of fatal accident in Lake County

A 26-year-old Ocala man has been arrested after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident that claimed the life of a Lake County man.

Matthew Downing was arrested Friday night by the Florida Highway Patrol on a charge of first degree felony leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

His 2010 Nissan Altima has been identified as the vehicle that left the scene of the accident which occurred at 6:40 p.m. Thursday leaving 31-year-old Antwan Bailey dead at the scene.

Bailey had been walking a bicycle on County Road 452 when he was struck by a SUV driven by Jennifer Mendoza, 41, of Sorrento, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. She had been attempting to pass a truck when her vehicle struck Bailey and knocked him to the ground. A second vehicle, believed to have been Downing’s Nissan Altima ran over Bailey and fled the scene. Bailey was pronounced dead by the Medical Examiner.

Downing was being held without bond at the Lake County Jail.

Belleview police assisted FHP in the investigation.
