A 30-year-old payroll clerk was arrested after she allegedly helped herself to the bank account at Kling Towing in Fruitland Park.

Ashley Lynn Guzman of Lady Lake is facing a charge of scheme to defraud following her arrest Wednesday afternoon by Lake County sheriff’s deputies.

On June 13, one of the business owners noticed a shortage of funds in the bank account. It was determined that Guzman had written herself unauthorized checks for $200 and $75, claimed not to have received a $1,162.15 payroll check and then cashed the original check and the replacement check, and racked up questionable hours over 11 pay periods, according to an arrest warrant. The total amount in question is $3,425.15, according to the warrant.

When Guzman was terminated, she said she could not repay the money, but left her car in an effort to make amends. However, Guzman’s father showed up and took the car and said it belonged to him, not Guzman.

She was booked at the Lake County Jail. She was released after posting $2,000 bond.
