Philip C Beal, originally of Hanover, MA and The Villages, FL, passed away peacefully, after a period of declining health, on Thursday, February 2, 2017. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara P. Beal, with whom he had shared 62 years of marriage. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Born in 1925 to Grace E. and John Woodbridge Beal, he grew up in a loving family with three brothers- Jack, David and Tom – with whom he remained close throughout their lives. He excelled at Hanover High School and was a proud graduate of Babson College and Tufts University. He served his country during World War II as a member of the US Army Military Police. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Beal resided in Hanover, MA, for forty years, where they raised four children. In 1990 they retired to Venice FL and in 2002 they made The Villages their home. Despite his 27 years in Florida, he remained a New Englander at heart. For more than 20 years Mr. Beal was the Superintendent of Public Works for the Town of Hanover where he was responsible for implementing new technologies and forward thinking improvements. Most notably was the design and development of the Pond Street Water facility in the 1960’s, the first of its kind to be operated completely by computer. Prior to that he led his own and a number of local businesses focused on water resource management and system design including Aetna Engineering of Pembroke MA and Philip C. Beal Associates. He was widely recognized for his professional accomplishments including his appointment by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to the State Water & Aquifer Resource Commission and by the dedication of a series of wells for the Town of Hanover as “Phil’s Field”, using what were then, in 1970, futuristic aquifer exploration technologies. Active in the community, he was as a member of the Hanover, MA Board of Water Commissioners, the Hanover Fire Department, Freemasons Phoenix Lodge A.F. & A.M., Rotary International, and the American Legion. He was an avid sailor and a member of the Satuit Boat Club of Scituate MA, and The Bluewater Fog Runners of the North American Hemisphere. Philip was a patient, wise, nurturing and fun father to Peter & Mary Beth of Newtown, CT, Stephan & Cynthia of San Diego, CA, Kirkley Paige Beal & Erin Creighton of Pittsburgh, PA, Sandra Willard and her late husband Mike of Williamsburg, VA. He treasured his grandchildren, Christine & Christopher Hutto and great- granddaughter, Addison Hutto, Ryan Willard, Owen & Alexander Beal, and Jack, Caroline & Christopher Beal, and loved watching them grow up. A memorial service will be scheduled at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at Churchill Cemetery in Norwell, MA.
