A Lady Lake police officer chased down a man suspected of stealing a cell phone Wednesday morning at Best Buy.
David Dean Shrout, 46, of Fruitland Park, entered the store, selected a phone and then entered the handicap stall in the men’s room at the store, according to an arrest report. A store employee detected the sound of plastic packaging being opened. As Shrout attempted to leave the store, Best Buy personnel tried to stop him, but he pushed past them and took off running.
Officer Matthew Duryea arrived on the scene and pursued Shrout to the Oak Meadows subdivision behind Target. Duryea was able to chase Shrout down on foot.
He was arrested on charges of retail theft, resisting a merchant and resisting arrest. He was booked at the Lake County Jail.
Short had been arrested in January on a charge of violating his Marion County probation on a charge of reckless driving involving alcohol.
