Two cases of locally acquired chikungunya fever, a mosquito-transmitted disease, were recently confirmed by the Florida Department of Health.
Symptoms, which can show up three to seven days after infection, include fever, severe joint pain, joint swelling, rash, back pain, headache, nausea, vomiting and redness around the eyes. They typically resolve on their own.
The Sumter County Extension Office will present an hourlong program about the viral mosquito-borne disease at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6 at The Villages Sumter County Service Center, 7375 Powell Road, Wildwood.
The program will offer information on how to protect yourself from the mosquito-borne disease.
Jim Davis and Lloyd Singleton of the IFAS Extension Program will be presenting information.
