Quilting Guild of The Villages donates money to Villages Honor Flight, Villagers for Hospice

The Quilting Guild of The Villages presented two checks, one to Villages Honor Flight and one to Villagers for Hospice at their March meeting Tuesday evening at Laurel Manor. Each charity received a check for $2,650. Past President Beth Bender presented the checks.

Barbara Cooksey and Flo Knorr accepted the check on behalf of Honor Flight.

“We are a one hundred percent volunteer organization and rely on support from groups like you to keep us going,” said Cooksey. “It costs $500 to send a veteran to Washington, D.C. for the day.” Cooksey asked how many in the quilters had made a quilt for a veteran, many hands went up. “They truly appreciate it,” said Cooksey. “They receive the quilts at the beginning of the trip and it just sets the tone.”

Barbara Williams accepted the check for Villagers for Hospice.

“This is wonderful,” said Williams. “This will go in the new building fund for Cornerstone Hospice.” She noted the appropriateness of receiving a check from the Quilting Guild because one of the new buildings at Cornerstone will be a Healing Arts building.

The Quilting Guild earned the money to donate to charity by raffling a quilt at the 2017 Showcase of Quilts. The making of this quilt and selling the raffle tickets was the responsibility of the Quilting B’s Chapter. Six members of the Quilting B’s sold tickets and everybody in the chapter sold raffle tickets,” said Bender. The quilt brought in $5,300.
