Renee Zellweger is back in reboot of Bridget Jones franchise

Renee Zellweger is at it again in the third episode of the Bridget Jones series.  This time Bridget is a successful TV producer in London who feels that life is passing her by. She is 43 years old (actual age is 47) and her purpose in life is questionable. Trying to find some answers she attends a British version of the Woodstock Festival and by chance ends up with in a one night stand with American Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey).

Bridget is already sexually involved with the married Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) “I’m getting a divorce”.  Now carrying on with two men at the same time doesn’t make her a slut—or does it?  Things get more complicated when she gets pregnant.  Either man could be the father.

For some unexplained reason she chooses not to pursue the DNA route and leaves fatherhood a mystery despite the prodding of her obstetrician (Emma Thompson) who dubs Jones’s predicament as a geriatric situation.  Both men sweat out the pregnancy for the duration of the film.

Zellweger is an accomplished actress (Roxy Hart in “Chicago”) with a long list of credits. The movie, however, is poorly shot with Bridget’s face full front filling the screen 67 percent of the time.

Hugh Grant, a staple in the first two flicks, wisely opted out of this one. Somehow, getting pregnant outside of marriage not knowing who the father is doesn’t seem funny to me.  I expected more in a film boasting a romantic comedy genre. Skip this one. Currently there are several other great other choices currently showing in town.

“Bridget Jones’s Baby” is on the play bill at the Old Mill Theater and Barnstorm Theater in The Villages.
