Richard E. ‘Dick’ Harris

Richard E. “Dick” Harris, 89, of The Villages, FL, passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2017. He was born in Youngstown, OH, and lived in Beloit, WI prior to moving to Charleston, SC during WWII.

He graduated from Chicora H.S. He attended The Citadel, Charleston, SC and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Chemistry and began a 20 year military career. He served in the Korean Conflict, earning a purple heart.

In January, 1951, he married his beloved Marilyn. He earned a M.S. Degree in Business Administration. During his Army career, he served in many locations including Germany, Hawaii, and The Pentagon. He retired from the Army in 1969 with the rank of Lt. Colonel, having received the Legion of Merit award. He began his second career in the Civil Service and served many years at Rock Island Arsenal, IL, retiring in 1988 from the International Logistics Directorate. While in Illinois he and Marilyn belonged to the Pinnacle County Club and enjoyed many rounds of golf with good friends. As a husband and father he was a proud protector and provider. He was also much respected at work and many described him “as the best boss ever.” He was a great friend to many.

He and Marilyn moved to The Villages, FL in 2007. He enjoyed watching sports, playing golf, and attending musical events. He was an active member of New Covenant United Methodist Church, NARFE, KT Club, and Illinois Club.

Survivors include daughter, Cheryl, The Villages; son, Rich of Davenport; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 10, 2017 at New Covenant United Methodist Church, The Villages, FL.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the Helping Hands Ministry at NCUMC, 3470 Woodbridge Drive, The Villages, FL 32162.
