As the GOP looks to grasp the U.S. Senate back from Democratic control, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a possible candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, is trying to rally Republicans in the final days of the election — including in key states that will determine the party’s presidential nominee in 2016.
Rubio sent out an email to conservatives on Thursday, urging them to support the National Republican Senate Committee (NRSC).
“I can still remember that first moment when I decided to run for the United States Senate in 2009. Under President Obama, I saw our country heading in the absolute wrong direction, pushing disastrous policies like Obamacare, which expanded the size of the federal government,” Rubio wrote. “As the father of four young children, I got to thinking about the future of my children. What would their future look like, if the federal government continued to grow under liberal politicians like President Obama and Harry Reid? It made me want to do something.”
Rubio called on Republicans to back GOP candidates “in order to elect strong conservatives and ensure a Republican Senate majority to stop President Obama and Harry Reid’s liberal agenda.”
On Tuesday and Wednesday, Rubio turned his attention to Iowa, home of the first presidential caucus contest, to help Republican Joni Ernst campaign for the seat being vacated by the retiring U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa. Rubio also took the stump for Republican congressional candidate Rod Blum who is trying to win an open congressional seat in the Hawkeye State.
Iowa is not the only early presidential state on Rubio’s mind. Last week, he was in New Hampshire, which holds the first presidential primary, to help former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., try to defeat U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H.
Rubio doubled down on his support for Brown this week
“I’m supporting Scott because I believe in him and I trust him, and so can New Hampshire,” Rubio insisted on Wednesday. “We need more leaders like Scott Brown in the U.S. Senate.”
Rubio also penned an op-ed praising Brown, which was published on Tuesday in the Manchester Union Leader.
