Safety on multi-modal paths

To the Editor:

I am a big walker on the paths and start early in the morning when it is dark. I always carry a light and I encourage other walkers and runners to do the same. When golf carts are approaching me I ensure they see me. I have noticed some slow down and others do not. The carts that slow down are almost always being driven by women.  I encourage all to slow down as you would if you were driving a car and met a walker or runner on the side of the road. Why not slow your golf cart down and give some space. I have been to two safety classes and at these classes I learned that the white posts that say stop are not a suggestion. They carry the same weight as an 8 sided red stop sign. In addition, I learned that when your friends and family come to The Villages and rent a golf cart they are not covered by insurance and they are more apt to get in an accident due to inexperience. So make sure you warn them.
