The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has issued a scam alert after receiving about 100 reports in the past 48 hours from Villagers about bogus calls from the Internal Revenue Service.
One person locally was scammed out of $1,800, said Sgt. Robert Siemer.
In the scam, a caller claims that a tax error was made in the individual’s 2012 tax return.
The caller, pretending to represent the IRS, says that if payment is not made immediately by credit card that sheriff’s office will send a deputy to arrest them.
“The IRS will not call you,” Siemer added.
