Deputy Dick Bennett, Lt. Robert Siemer and Deputy Jimmy Little, from left, were busy collecting medicine at the event in 2015.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office will be sponsoring Operation Medicine Cabinet from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at RJ Gators in Lake Sumter Landing.

Operation Medicine Cabinet gives residents a chance to dispose of unused or expired prescriptions.

Proper disposal prevents the medicine from being stolen or abused. Thrown into the garbage, pharmaceuticals can end up leeching into the environment. Flushed down a toilet the medicines can contaminate groundwater supply. Disposing of unused or expired medicine will also keep children and grandchildren from getting into the prescriptions.

Operation Medicine Cabinet provides a safe way of destroying pharmaceuticals through incineration, to avoid polluting the environment.

There will also be a pancake breakfast at the restaurant to support Kids, Cops & Christmas. You can read more about that HERE
