On July 6, Marion County Sheriff’s Office detectives responded to 10450 SW 45th Avenue in Ocala to investigate a suspicious death, according to a media release. At that location, detectives discovered a man with two gunshot wounds to his body, an arrest report stated. An autopsy of the victim’s remains confirmed that the victim had been shot in the back of the head and in his back. After further investigation, it was discovered that two safes had been stolen from the home. After reviewing security video taken from outside the victim’s home, detectives could see 32-year-old Charles James Willoughby placing the stolen safes into his vehicle during the time the murder took place. Further evidence from inside the home helped detectives determine that Willoughby had murdered the victim.

Willoughby was already in Marion County Jail as of July 14 on charges of grand theft, petit theft, trafficking in heroin and trafficking in methamphetamine. At the conclusion of their investigation Wednesday, detectives placed the additional charge of homicide on Willoughby.
