Sinkhole opens up in roadway at Main Street and U.S. Hwy. 27/441

A sinkhole opened up at about 5 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Main Street and U.S. Hwy. 27/441 in The Villages.

Southbound traffic was directed away from the sinkhole which was about four-feet across and appeared to be fairly deep.

Lady Lake police, the Villages Public Safety Department and Community Watch were all on the scene.

A nearby location experienced a sinkhole in 2015.

Sinkholes have been popping up in and around The Villages after Hurricane Irma let loose last week with an estimated 10 inches of rainfall.

A mammoth sinkhole opened up Saturday at American Legion Post #347.
