Sinkhole in Village of Buttonwood has entire neighborhood on edge

Sinkhole in Village of Buttonwood on Chalmer Terrace
A sinkhole has opened up on Chalmer Terrace in the Village of Buttonwood.

Cement trucks are lined up on Chalmer Terrace in the Village of Buttonwood pouring concrete down a sinkhole delicately positioned between two houses.

Villages Public Safety Department personnel remain on the scene of the sinkhole at the houses which back up to the Jacaranda Championship Golf Course.

The homes are in the 2000 block of Chalmer Terrace.

Linda Wiernasz and Paul Murray live a stone’s throw away in the Village of Pennecamp. They said they believe the homeowners in question are snowbirds.

“I was out there golfing. We saw it when it started to form,” Murray said. “Now you see how much this thing has opened up.”

Nervous neighbors have been out walking the streets trying to get a look at the situation. Plenty of cars and golf carts were cruising the nearby streets Saturday evening.

The Villages Public Safety Department has put up yellow tape to keep the public a safe distance from the sinkhole.

The sinkhole began to open up several days ago, but then it began expanding rapidly. The sinkhole is said to be 60 feet deep.
