Sinkholes repaired at Trailwinds Village as leaders look forward to Lowe’s opening

Sinkholes and damage to a new sewage lift station have been repaired at the Trailwinds Village development north of County Road 466A across from Pinellas Plaza.

The Wildwood City Commission Monday night authorized City Manager Jason McHugh to seek bids and accept the lowest one for a final engineering inspection of the system.

McHugh estimated bids would be $10,000 to $20,000.

“We’re going to put cameras down the pipes and make sure everything is working,” he said.

Foundation Services worked over the past two weeks to repair sinkholes under Trailwinds roads, which were closed during repairs.

The sinkholes, blamed partly on September’s Hurricane Irma, threatened the Jan. 11 opening of the Lowe’s Home Improvement Center. Besides the 103,000-square-foot Lowe’s, an Aldi grocery store and ABC Liquor store also are under construction in Trailwinds.

Two more anchor stores and several smaller retail stores also are planned. Ten small office buildings and a 247,000-square-foot storage building are slated for the west end.

Wildwood Mayor Ed Wolf said late last month that the city needed to make sure the sinkholes would not delay the Lowe’s opening.

“When they flush that first toilet, we better be ready,” he said.
