A 23-year-old Summerfield man was arrested after he admitted to acting as a decoy to enable a friend to switch pricetags on an item from the Buffalo Ridge Wal-Mart.
Steven Lee Lynch admitted to Sumter County sheriff’s deputies that he had tried to distract a loss prevention officer Friday evening while his friend switched a pricetag on a Dremel tool, according to the arrest report. The Dremel tool was to be used by the pair to cut scrap metal and the pair would split the proceeds, the arrest report indicated.
The other individual paid 97 cents for the tool at a self-checkout. The actual price of the tool was $77.88.
A loss prevention officer followed the pair outside of the store but they refused to go back into the Wal-Mart.
The following day, deputies made contact with Lynch and he admitted his role in the theft.
Lynch was arrested on charges of petit theft and resisting recovery of property.
He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $1,000 bond.
