Summerfield woman killed in crash on Sunset Harbor Road in Marion County

A Summerfield woman was killed early Friday in a crash on Sunset Harbor Road in Marion County.

Joshua Morgan, 29, of Wildwood was driving a 2014 Chrysler 200 at 4:50 a.m. on Sunset Harbor Road west of SE 115th Avenue above the posted speed limit when he drove off of the roadway onto the north shoulder of Sunset Harbor Road prior to a left curve in the roadway, according to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report. Morgan over-corrected to the right and veered across both travel lanes and onto the south shoulder at SE 115th Avenue, continuing to travel eastbound until the right side of his vehicle collided with a tree, the report stated.

The impact caused the vehicle to rotate in a clockwise direction in the grass shoulder of Sunset Harbor Road, while the left side wheels dug into the earth and caused the car to overturn. The roof of the vehicle then collided with a tree and came into rest in an upright position, according to the report.

Two other passengers, 38-year-old Jesus Torres-Flores of Ocala and 37-year-old Violette Rupp of Summerfield, were also in Morgan’s vehicle at the time of the crash.

Morgan, critically injured, and Torres-Flores, seriously injured, were both transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center. Rupp died at the scene of the crash.

No one in the vehicle had been wearing a seatbelt, the report noted.
