Sumter deputies arrest man who allegedly shot brother in tractor dispute

Sumter County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 54-year-old man who allegedly shot his brother Tuesday afternoon in a dispute over a tractor.

Mark Caines of Webster is being held without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center.

At 3:11 p.m. dispatchers  received a call in reference to a man being shot in the head.

Deputies responded to the Linden Cemetery on Highway 50 and met with the victim who had driven himself from the crime scene. The victim told deputies that his brother became argumentative over a tractor. The argument became physical and escalated to the suspect shooting the victim in the head with a 9mm pistol. EMS responded to treat the victim who was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center and was reported to be in stable condition. As of this morning, the victim is reported to have several skull fractures which required several staples and is in good condition, according to the sheriff’s office.

Caines was located at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday by deputies when he returned to the scene of the crime.
