Teen killed in crash that shut down roadway in Pinellas County

A teen died early Saturday as the result of a two vehicle collision in Pinellas County.

At 12:58 a.m., Donavan L. Patterson, 18, of Pinellas Park was driving a 2008 Dodge Caliber southbound on County Road 611 approaching the intersection of Curlew Road, while 22-year-old Dalton A. Cox of Clearwater was driving a 2003 Ford F-250 eastbound in the left turn lane of Curlew Road approaching CR 611, according to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report. Patterson failed to stop for a red traffic signal as both vehicles entered the intersection, the report stated. The front of Patterson’s vehicle collided with Cox’s vehicle, which overturned as both vehicles were re-directed to final rest in the southeast corner of the intersection as a result.

Jocelyn Kaila Schirmer, 18, of St. Petersburg had been a passenger in Patterson’s vehicle.

She died at the scene of the accident. She had not been wearing a seatbelt.

Three other passengers in Patterson’s vehicle were either critically or seriously injured. Patterson was seriously injured and was transported to Tampa General Hospital. Cox was also seriously injured and was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital. The crash closed portions of the roadway until 6:35 a.m.

Charges are pending.
