A toll booth operator is free on $2,500 bond after he was arrested for allegedly taking money from motorists intended for the State of Florida.

Carlos Luis Acevedo, 29, who works the toll booth at Exit 289 near Leesburg off the Florida Turnpike, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of grand theft.

A review of an audit report revealed multiple and unexplained shortages during Acevedo’s shifts and investigators found no malfunction with his toll equipment, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Acevedo, who resides in Leesburg, is accused of taking a total of $1,600.

He was booked at the Lake County Jail and released after posting bond.
