A golf tournament will be held at Hacienda Hills Country Club on Sept. 25 to raise money for Spinal Muscular Atrophy research and awarenses.
Village of Glenbrook residents Allan and Hazel White’s grandson Henry was diagnosed at 2-months-old with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a leading genetic cause of infant mortality.
The disease prevents proper muscle functions, such as walking or breathing. Parents of Henry, Eric and Valerie White, have taken extensive care of their son with constant visits to the Orlando Nemours Children’s Hospital just to receive an experimental drug that could potentially help the disease, as stated in their letter to Cure SMA.
Despite the experimental treatments, SMA unfortunately has no cure or treatment discovered yet.
Glenbrook neighbor Bob Chartock helped coordinate the 2016 Hope for Henry Cure SMA Golf Classic to raise awareness on the debilitating disease and help fund further research for a cure or treatment.
Through the Cure SMA organization, Chartock, along with other committee members, will host this year’s golf tournament, which will be a four-person scramble.
Following the tournament, there will be a dinner buffet featuring goodie bags, entertainment, and a cash bar.
Chartock stated that his goal for the event is to raise “$15,000 if not more,” and all proceeds will support research and programs to find a cure for SMA.
Prizes from the tournament are a hole in one golf cart, donated by The Villages Golf Cars, awards to the top four teams, and other rewards.
The day’s schedule begins with registration is from noon to 1 p.m. with a box lunch provided. The tournament will then commence at 2 p.m.
The entry fee for an individual player is $100, which includes 18 holes of golf, box lunch, and the dinner. The fee for a foursome is $400.
