Trucker killed in crash in which 300 gallons of fuel spilled on Interstate 95

A trucker from Virginia was killed in a crash in which 300 gallons of fuel spilled Monday night on Interstate 95 in Volusia County.

Herbert Byrd, 63, of Melfa, Va., had been at the wheel of a southbound semi hauling seafood at 10 p.m. when the truck drifted into the center median and struck several trees, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. The cab separated from the trailer and overturned. Approximately 300 gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway.

Byrd was transported to Halifax Medical Center where he died of injuries suffered in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
