Village of Amelia woman to lose license after crashing car into palm tree

A 71-year-old Village of Amelia woman who crashed her car into a palm tree earlier this year, will lose her driver’s license as a result of the crash.

Mary Jean Byrnes of 2179 Kerwood Loop in January told police she had been drinking rum and Coke at City Fire in The Villages prior to the accident.

On Thursday in Lake County Court, Byrnes entered a plea of no contest to a charge of driving under the influence. She was sentenced to 12 months probation, will lose her driver’s license for six months, and ordered to perform 50 hours of community service. She was also ordered to  consume or possess no alcohol and to attend DUI school and seek recommended treatment.
