Village of Caroline man arrested after altercation with woman over her mother

A 74-year-old Village of Caroline man was arrested after an alleged altercation with a woman Tuesday evening.

Bruce W. Smith was jailed at the Sumter County Detention Center on a charge of battery.

Sumter County sheriff’s deputies were called to his home on Woodruff Street at about 6:15 p.m. A woman reported that Smith had hit her with both of his hands in the chest area, according to an arrest report. The woman said Smith had been making comments in reference to her mother. The woman said Smith came into the kitchen and began yelling in her face. When she tried to get up from the kitchen table, Smith struck her, the report indicated.

He denied having done so.

He was released at 4:35 p.m.  Wednesday after posting $500 bond.
