A Village of Gilchrist man was arrested Tuesday morning on warrants charging him in an alleged attack on his neighbors during a return trip from a 2016 cruise.
Douglas Lamont Jensen, 62, was arrested at 7:25 a.m. at his home on Stepping Stone Path by the Florida Highway Patrol with assistance from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
Jensen allegedly grabbed the husband and wife by the backs of their necks after approaching them from behind at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 23 at the Fort Drum Service Plaza on the Florida Turnpike in Okeechobee County.
They were traveling in a tour group of 33 Villagers who had been on a cruise and had stopped for lunch, according to an arrest report from FHP. Jensen’s attack appeared to stem from a verbal disagreement that had taken place on the cruise ship.
An investigation was conducted by FHP into the alleged incident. After obtaining witness statements and reviewing video evidence of the incident, an arrest warrant was obtained through the Okeechobee State Attorney’s Office.
The couple he allegedly attacked also live on Stepping Stone Path in the Village of Gilchrist.
Jensen was booked on two counts of battery at the Sumter County Detention Center. Bond was set at $20,000.
