A Villager who had been driving an Audi in which four empty wine bottles were discovered was arrested after a crash near Palmer Legends Country Club.

Robert Patrick English, 41, who resides on Tarrson Boulevard in the Village of Silver Lake, was identified as the driver of the vehicle by three witnesses at the scene of the crash which occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Palmer Way and Buena Vista Boulevard.

It appeared English had been drinking, but he said he had stopped drinking “about an hour ago and that he was not drunk,” according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Four empty wine bottles were found on the floorboard of his red Audi TT, the report indicated.

He failed field sobriety exercises and at one point complained, “I’m trying; it’s hard.”

He refused to provide a breath sample.

He was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, failure to submit to a breath or urine test and cited for careless driving.

He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $1,000 bond.
