A 72-year-old Villager arrested last month after allegedly pushing his live-in girlfriend out of a golf cart has entered a plea in the case.

John Francis Bessette entered a plea of guilty to a charge of battery on Sept. 16 in Sumter County Court. He is scheduled for sentencing on Wednesday.

He had been arrested Aug. 27 after allegedly pushing out the woman while driving in the Village of Amelia.

He and his girlfriend had been at City Fire that night and got into an argument afterward while traveling in the golf cart, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman and a witness said Bessette braked hard in the golf cart and pushed the woman out on Darwin Terrace.

However, Bessette said he had stopped  the golf cart and allowed the woman to safely exit the vehicle.

He remains free on $5,000 bond.
