A resident of the Phillips Villas in the Village of Woodbury listed her medical conditions during a traffic stop and subsequent drunk driving investigation.
Elizabeth Ann Ballantine, 50, had been driving a blue Volkswagen Jetta northbound in the southbound lane of Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to an arrest report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
When asked why she had been driving on the wrong side of the road, Ballantine initially said she was from The Villages and then said she was from New England. She also said she wasn’t “from around here.”
The deputy suspected Ballantine had been drinking. She said she had two glasses of wine, but later said it was three.
Ballantine was asked if she had any medical conditions. She told the deputy she has Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and that she is a diabetic. Marion County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and determined her blood sugar was at 155.
She failed field sobriety exercises and refused to provide a breath sample. She told the deputy she owns a spa and tells her clients never to take a breath test, according to the arrest report.
Ballantine’s husband arrived on the scene and collected his wife’s vehicle and a passenger who had been traveling with her. Ballantine was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and booked at the Marion County Jail. Bond was set at $1,000.
