Villager Bill Copeland has prevailed in his battle with some “nasty” trees that have plagued his property.
The Village of Largo resident had his tree-removal request granted Friday morning by Community Development District 6 supervisors.
Two of the 15 trees along Bonita Boulevard to be removed and replaced hang over Copeland’s yard on Cordova Circle. The 15 trees are on District property.
The Elm trees have been dropping leaves and seeds onto his yard. Large roots have grown into his yard from the trees.
“These trees are nasty,” Copeland said.
“I get calls from my neighbors all the time complaining that ‘my’ trees’ leaves are getting in their yard,” Copeland said. “They are not my trees.”
Copeland has had to resod twice in the seven years he has owned the home. He plans to resod again when the trees are removed.
In February, he took his case to the supervisors who asked District Property Manager Sam Wartinbee to look into the matter.
At Friday’s meeting, CDD 6 supervisors agreed to spend roughly $20,000 to remove and replace the trees.
CDD 6 Supervisor Donna Kempa said it was simply that the wrong type of tree had been planted.
Copeland thanked Kempa who had championed his request.
The trees will be removed within two weeks. Wartinbee said he could not pinpoint when the new trees will be put in.
