A 76-year-old Villager who reportedly tried to convince the arresting officer that a bottle of beer was a Coca-Cola, is facing a charge of driving under the influence.

Eugene Charles Johnson of the Village of Bonita was driving a Ford Mustang on Powell Road shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday when he was pulled over by a Wildwood police officer. According to the arrest report, the officer saw Johnson’s vehicle swerving within the lane.

When he approached Johnson, the officer noted the smell of alcohol, the report indicated. The deputy saw a glass bottle in the center console of the car and asked what it was. Johnson told him it was a “Coke,” according to the arrest report. But when he showed it to the officer, the officer noted that it was a bottle of Budweiser. The officer also noted that the bottle was still cold and had condensation on it.

Johnson failed field sobriety exercises and was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center where bond was set at $1,000.
