Villager remains in Ocala hospital week after collision with police car

A 42-year-old Villager continues to recover at Ocala Regional Medical Center from injuries suffered last week when her vehicle was struck by a Leesburg police car.

Maria N. Varletta of Palo Alto Avenue was driving a white Saturn convertible at 5:42 a.m. Sept. 18 and crossing U.S. Hwy. 27/441 when the accident occurred. The passenger side of her vehicle was struck by the squad car driven by David W. Robinson, 41, of Leesburg, according to an accident report from the Lady Lake Police Department.

Following the early morning accident at U.S. Hwy. 27/441 and Avenida Central, Varletta had been transported by EMS to ORMC. Robinson was transported by law enforcement to Leesburg Regional Medical Center to be evaluated for injuries, according to the accident report.

The dash cam from the squad car, a 2013 Dodge Charger, will be reviewed as part of the investigation, the report noted. It also indicated there were no independent witnesses to the crash.

The investigation into the crash continues.
