Villagers Max and Don Lavin married six years ago after each losing their spouses. They had both owned and loved dogs previously but never together.
On a rainy day they were heading to a movie at Old Mill Playhouse. And volunteers from the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County had animals at the square, hoping to find homes for them.
Max and Don spotted Sam, a one-eyed Beagle.
Sam’s journey was recently featured on Villages-News.com. You can read about it at the link below:

“We went to the movie, but then later we started talking about Sam,” Max said.
And they kept talking about him.
“We weren’t planning to get a dog,” she said. “But there was something about him. And finally I said, ‘Let’s do it.'”
They initiated the adoption process through the Humane Society and Friday they picked up Sam, freshly bathed and ready to go “home.”
To try to ease the transition, the Lavins took a dog toy, slept with it and then gave it to Sam to sleep with in his kennel at the Humane Society in the days leading up to the final adoption. They wanted him to pick up on the smell of his new owners.
“These are happy days for us when we adopt out an animal, especially a special needs animal,” said Villager Bill Gottschalk, chairman of the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County.
