The Retired Military Family Group in The Villages heard from a prominent Air Force official Wednesday evening, who happens to be a Villager’s daughter.
Heidi H. Grant is the Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force, International Affairs, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.
She is the daughter of Village of Rio Grande resident Jan Honecker.
Grant, married with a 16-year-old daughter, talked about balancing work and family.
Not an easy task when you are in a job that takes you all over the world and had you working for famed Gen. Tommy Franks.
The youngest of three children, her father had enjoyed a long career in the Air Force.
When she graduated from college, she landed a job in the insurance industry “making lots of money.”
But it wasn’t fulfilling.
So she wound up applying for a job with Gen. Franks. Next thing she knew, she was wearing a uniform and learning to shoot a gun.
As she moved up the ranks at the Pentagon, she needed to learn to play golf.
“So I came down to The Villages for a lesson,” she told the audience during her talk at Laurel Manor Recreation Center.
She said The Villages has been a big part of her extended family. Grant toured the military-themed Eisenhower Recreation Center earlier in the day and remarked on how much she had enjoyed it.
The Retired Military Family Group donated $200 to Villages Honor Flight in honor of Grant.
