A Villager’s son’s high-tech sleuthing helped solve the mystery of his father’s missing golf cart.
Villager Jay Skiff had taken his 2009 Yahama golf cart and parked at about 6 p.m. Saturday near McCall’s Tavern at Spanish Springs Town Square. When he returned at about 7:30 p.m., the golf cart was gone. Also gone was the iPhone he had left in the golf cart. Skiff called Lady Lake police and he also called his son in Virginia Beach, Va. to let him know he may be difficult to reach since his iPhone was missing.
His son suggested using the Find My iPhone app to locate the phone and the golf cart. They got a hit in the Village of Haciendas of Mission Hills.
Skiff let the police know about the new development, but it wasn’t long before the golf cart was on the move. Still tracking the golf cart was the son in Virginia Beach. The golf cart was now at Winn-Dixie.
Meanwhile, police went to the home in Haciendas of Mission Hills where a woman from Pennsylvania answered the door. She said her husband had just left in the golf cart on a grocery run.
Turns out they had rented a golf cart and had parked it Saturday night next to Skiff’s golf cart. When the snowbirds left that evening, they left in Skiff’s golf cart and left the rental behind.
The police helped set up the swap so the golf carts were returned to the rightful people.
Police asked Skiff if he wanted to pursue charges.
“I told them, ‘Just let it go,’” he said.
Skiff had good reason to fear his golf cart might have been stolen. Four golf carts were stolen in January from Spanish Springs. You can read more about that HERE
