The 11thannual Villages Men’s Residents Cup golf tournament at Mallory Hill Country Club concludes Saturday with individual match play.
The three-day tournament began Thursday with best-ball rounds and Chapman alternate shot play was featured on Friday. Qualifying rounds were held last month.
In best ball, golfers in the round play from the ball closest to the cup or in the best position after teeing off. In Chapman alternate shot play, they switch balls after teeing off.
This year, all 104 golfers who came to the qualifying rounds were accepted into the tournament, said co-organizer Jim Fein. The qualifying rounds can accommodate up to 196 players.
Gregg Foster is co-organizer of the event.
He said the tournament, which was run by Charlie Brooks during its first decade, was patterned after the Ryder Cup tournament. Golfers age 70 and over were allowed to qualify for either the white or blue tees while younger golfers were required to play from the blue tees.
Players were divided into two 52-member teams, each with two divisions. The winner is the team with the most points, but no trophies are awarded.
“It’s all prestige,” Fein said. “Bragging rights.”
He said a traditional Sunday night dinner was canceled this year. Instead, tournament players were offered a catered meal last Tuesday night at La Hacienda Country Club.
Players also were drafted by team captains that night and given the opportunity to buy team shirts. The two golfers with the lowest scores during the qualifying rounds became team captains.
Costs to participate were a $10 administrative fee, green fees and about $25 for a tee shirt.
