The Villages Musical Company is changing its name to The Villages Musical Theater.

“This name change was suggested to our membership by our Board of Directors in order to better represent the types of productions we create, which are faithful reproductions of Broadway musicals.  Our membership unanimously approved the name change, and we have now completed the necessary paper work with the State of Florida and with The Villages Recreation Department,” the group said in a news release. “So, what you have known as The Villages Musical Company since 2002 is now The Villages Musical Theater.”

The group has also launched a website: www.thevillagesmusicaltheater.org

Recently, The Villages Musical Theater has awarded $6,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at Villages High School who will pursue music degrees in college, and donated $5,000 to The Villagers for  Hospice, and $5,000 to SoZo Kids.  These two donations were from the proceeds from their production of “Brigadoon.”

Upcoming shows for Villages Musical Theater include “They’re Playing Our Song” in Octoberdirected by Steve Rubin; and “The Music Man” in March directed by Sandie Hawthorne.  In addition, the VMT Board has approved two other musicals; the Steven Sondheim hit “Company” will be our October, 2015, show, directed by Carol Greenfield; and our March, 2016, show will be the Gershwin smash “Crazy For You”, directed by Bill Davis with choreography by Helene Yelverton.
