The Villages Parrot Heads presented a check for $20,000 to Villagers for Hospice at Mallory Country Club on Wednesday. Barbara Williams, vice president of Villagers for Hospice, accepted the check.
“This is absolutely awesome,” Williams said.
She told the crowd that this money is going in the bank towards paying for the two new buildings that will be built on the campus, a new patient building and a healing arts building. Villagers for Hospice raises funds specifically for the Cornerstone Villages Hospice House located at County Road 466 and Morse Boulevard. They hope to break ground in February of 2017.
The money was raised from a golf tournament held at Mallory Hill Country Club in September.
“This is the only event where all the money is given to one charity,” said Lee Caron, president of the Parrot Heads. “The money is usually divided among a few charities.”
Danny and Lil Roe co-chaired the golf tournament. Over 70 volunteers helped with the event; 162 golfers participated. For the last couple of years the Parrot Heads have had assistance from Fernandina and Friends Social Club and Villagers for Hospice volunteers to grow the event even larger.
“Dottie Edmiston worked tirelessly getting prizes,” said Danny Roe. “It is a great cause and a good thing to do. Let’s face it we are kind of investing in our future.”
A Villagers for Hospice volunteer, Edmiston is in charge of marketing and pounded the streets looking for businesses to contribute prizes.
Villagers for Hospice was founded by Arlene Bentz in 2001. Since they began operation they have raised more than three million dollars, money which is primarily going towards the new buildings. Bentz still serves as president.
