The Villages Public Safety Department on Sunday afternoon reunited some baby ducklings with their worried mother at Lake Sumter Landing.

At about 3 p.m., a young man visiting The Villages noticed the  ducklings in the lower level of the locked unit where the canal flows under the roadway near Honest John’s Whiskey and Provisions on Old Camp Road.

He noticed that the mother duck was on a ledge five feet above the lower level and the ducklings could not get up to their mother.

Minutes later, The Villages Public Safety Department arrived on the scene.

Firefighters were initially unable to get the ducklings. They were aided by an employee of RJ Gators who brought them one of the long-handled fishnets used for decoration at the restaurant. Firefighters were able to use the net to rescue the ducklings.

The ducklings were reunited with their parents.
