Wildwood mayor cuts ribbon on new Village of Fenney recreation Center

The Spanish Moss Recreation Center in the Village of Fenney opened with little fanfare and no speeches. The ribbon was cut and the cheerleaders cheered and then it was time to enjoy the amenities. Moments after the ribbon cutting a group hopped in the pool to play volleyball. A snowbird, who has made it his mission to cycle to all of the pools, did laps in his 83rd pool of the season completing the list.

In addition to the sports pool, this center offers places for bocce, shuffleboard and pickleball. Soon there will be exercise equipment for people to use outside and the walking trail in a beautiful natural setting is already in use.

Village of Charlotte residents Donna and Bob Yambasky enjoy going to the recreation center openings.

“We go to lots of openings; it is nice to see people celebrating the expansion of The Villages,” said Donna. “I think it is nice that The Villages is expanding because if they didn’t build here someone else would.”

This recreation center has real appeal to the Yambaskys because of the walking trail.

“The walking trail is beautiful and makes this area very enticing,” said Donna. “We like where we are now, but who knows. . .”

Wildwood Mayor Ed Wolf cut the ribbon.

After the ceremony the mayor commented, “Well this is exciting. We are proud to have them and glad to see it coming to fruition.”

VHA president Fred Briggs came out to see the opening of the recreation center.

“The homes are beautiful and decorated exquisitely. The oak trees are fantastic, look to be hundreds of years old,” Briggs said.

The model homes were open Friday afternoon and the traffic in and out was bustling. Ben and Marleen Foster happened upon the opening of the new recreation center. They came to look at the homes.

“We are very happy with our home in Dunedin, just looking to get ideas,” said Ben. “We’re just curious to see the new models, get decorating ideas and we found the exact hot tub we have been looking for, that was great.”

Another Village of Fenney recreation center is scheduled to open in early summer. All Villagers can make use of the amenities at the Spanish Moss Recreation Center including the lovely tree-lined walking trail.
